Oswald The Lucky Rabbit
I found an Oswald the Rabbit model sheet in a library book whenI was a kid and it blew my mind I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw!! The Book was called Disney Art Of Animation or something.
Here is the sheet below that inspired me so much. I still think Oswald is one of the coolest looking characters.Im so happy Disney is bringing him back,he still remains one of my favorites, proprtion, design and appeal of this character blow me away! He is so simple too, thats what I love the most.

I really love the line work. I miss the boots, though. I think it gives him a better balance of black and white. Oswald is a personal favorite of mine. I wish there was more if his shorts available on DVD.
The model sheet looks much more like Lantz era Oswald than Disney era...
That's really awesome! I love your design! I love 30's stuff.
(PS: does your cintiq give you squiggly lines too? D:)
Nice Jessica, Oswald rocks
ya! I need a better operating system

Great homage, Jess! Ted is certainly right though. That's definitely a Lantz model sheet. If you own the first volume of the Woody Woodpecker DVD collection, you can see a few cartoons with that exact model. That design never appeared in the original silent Disney productions.
The mid-30s Oswald design is probably one of the ugliest, unappealing, grotesque cartoon drawings I've ever seen, IMO, and not in a good way either. It's the exact opposite of the qualities that you described for the character. An attempt of being cute that falls flat. Have you ever seen that version?
Maybe you should do a homage to Ed Benedict. I always found his designs to be super appealing, simple, and well drawn all at the same time! He sure did a lot with the UPA style.
Haha, GREAT TRIBUTE JESS! super appealing
Cute interpretation as usual Jessica. I remember having a "How to Draw Woody Woodpecker and Friends" book and it had a circa 1950s Oswald. His design totally lacked the simplicity of the earlier versions.
HA! Nice Oswald. I'd love to see your take on Gertie the Dinosaur.
goodness i love this!
Great blog!! somebody loves rabbits! Nothing wrong with that!! Cheers!

Oswald looks a little high strung in your drawing, Jessica.
I love your interpretation! So appealing!
I think I have that book in question. I got it when my folks got a subscription to The Disney Channel. Had to send away for it. Disney's The Art of Animation from Mickey Mouse to Beauty and the Beast. Still have it to this day.

Your Oswald tribute is cool. I think I have that book, but I think it's a lantz model sheet that they asked permission for.
